Imho you'd be best to stay balance until you hit 80. Just build up your resto set while you level and finish it out as balance. The amount of time spent on mobs while you're resto is going to be longer than if you were balance.

I had a Hunter a while ago (level 60 NE, Draka), and back then Survival was the PvP build. Obviously, with the Agi nerf, not so anymore. I'm planning on MM spec, and I don't need any help with spec or how to play Hunter...I've got that down cold.
What I need to know is how pets have changed; I know about the attack normalization and all about the buff to pets that they take some of your stats, etc...It's the individual pets that concerns me.
So, a few questions:
Do most Hunters still use cats/wolves?
If not, what types do...

For PvE, I'd say your GM is full of crap. 10k Stamina isn't necessary for a hunter, especially at the expense of AP, Agi, and/or Crit. When I started fine tuning, it was Stam that went by the wayside. I started at like 9.5k Stam and shifted some gems to more AP/Agi/Crit and ended up with 8.7k or so Stam. But, in the process, my Crit bumped up to about 21 and my RAP jumped up so that with True Shot Aura and Aspect of the Hawk up, I'm right about 2k RAP. There's probably a couple more tweaks I should do to sacrifice a little more Stam for AP, Agi, Crit, too.
Explain to your GM that a hunter's job is to deal out ranged dps, not take hits. Sacrificing AP for Stam isn't the way to go. I'd focus on gear/gems that are +AP, +Agi, or +Crit. You need enough Stam to take some hits, but you don't need to be in the tank range for Stam.
